A good, competitive game of cricket

On winning the toss on a sunny May afternoon with the ground at Brook looking a picture, Loxwood elected to field in a 40-over match.

Jon Tudor (30) and John Hamilton (retired hurt 42) built a steady opening partnership of 65 against accurate bowling on a grassy wicket which offered some movement to the bowlers off a length. With the batsmen looking to push on towards the target discussed in the changing room of 200 plus, Jon was bowled around his legs and John Hamilton then tweaked a hamstring going for a second run, an injury which eventually forced him from the field. Harrison Ward (33), timing the ball sweetly, lifted the scoring rate and looked well set before gloving a loose delivery down the leg side to the 'keeper. An excellent partnership between Ben Ward (19) and Alex Serrano (27) took the total to within striking distance of the 200 before both were dismissed. A final tight three overs from the Loxwood bowlers denied the home side their target with the score finishing on 189 for 9. Certainly a competitive score but perhaps a few runs light.

Opening the bowling after tea, Harrison Ward (8 2 36 1) and Jon Tudor (8 2 21 1) could easily have picked up several early wickets. Harrison bowled with good pace whilst not being entirely happy with his line to the left-hander, Nicholl, who played at and missed several deliveries and mis-timed a drive to just wide of mid-off. Had his wicket been taken in those early overs, the result might have been different: he went on to score 72. Jon Tudor continued where he had left off at Droxford with excellent line, length and movement off the seam. A very good spell indeed with no luck.

Alex Serrano (4 0 18 0), after an interesting first ball of the season, bowled some cracking deliveries and, again, was unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets before being ruled out of the attack by an old shoulder injury. Pat Clarke (8 0 51 0) bowled well but encountered the by now well set Nicholl who was hitting the ball hard before finally falling to a good catch by Jon Tudor in the deep off the bowling of Harrison Ward returning to the attack.

Once again, Will Owen (6 0 39 1) and Theo Clarke 94.1 0 25 0) bowled well not being afraid to flight the ball.

But, in the end, 189 did prove to be a few runs light and, with 38 extras (including 20 wides and 17 byes) assisting their progress, Loxwood, able to keep wickets in hand, reached their target - but with only 11 balls to spare.

Special thanks to Zach Clarke who fielded for John Hamilton and was outstanding and John Williams for his help setting the ground up before the match.

It was a good and competitive match from first to last, played in excellent spirit and enjoyed by both sides.
